Understanding ADHD in Adults
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 5–7% of adults worldwide. It is characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere significantly with daily functioning. Many adults live for years without a diagnosis, attributing their struggles to laziness, poor character, or anxiety.
The WHO Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v1.1) is the gold-standard screening tool recommended by the World Health Organization. Adhddiagnos offers this test free of charge, with immediate interpretation in plain language. A positive result does not confirm a diagnosis but strongly suggests further clinical evaluation is worthwhile.
Common Signs of ADHD in Adults
Adult ADHD often presents differently than childhood ADHD. Hyperactivity becomes an inner restlessness rather than physical running around. The most common challenges include: chronic procrastination, difficulty starting and finishing tasks, poor time management (often called "time blindness"), impulsive decisions, emotional dysregulation, and difficulty maintaining focus in low-stimulation environments.
Many adults with ADHD also experience hyperfocus – the paradoxical ability to become intensely absorbed in highly stimulating or interesting activities for hours. This can mask the underlying attention regulation difficulty and confuse both individuals and clinicians.
What to Do After Taking the Test
If your ASRS screening indicates elevated ADHD symptoms, the recommended next step is to consult your primary care physician (GP) and request a referral to a psychiatrist or neuropsychiatric assessment unit. In Sweden (where Adhddiagnos is based), this referral is handled through the regional healthcare system. In other countries, pathways vary.
Bring your screening results to the appointment as a discussion aid. Describe specific situations where the symptoms have impaired your functioning – at work, in relationships, or managing daily responsibilities. The more concrete your examples, the more useful information your clinician has to work with.
